What is Vote-Discuss-Revote?

The vote-discuss-revote technique helps a group understand differences and discuss them to achieve consensus. Unlike single-round voting, this technique gives everyone an opportunity to advocate for an option they feel strongly about, and for others to change their mind after learning more from others.

At the start of the vote-discuss-revote technique, the group very briefly discusses the options then casts votes for their preferred option. If the group votes unanimously on this first vote, the decision is made and they move on. Otherwise, they take a moment to see the distribution of votes and advocate for an option they feel should receive more votes. Everyone who wants to advocate for an option does so. Then, the first round of votes is removed and the group votes again. On this second round, the vote tally is used to select the winning option.
